Arch (2017) is a collaboration between Elizabeth Schwaiger and Seth Orion Schwaiger exhibited during Good Mourning Tis of Thee, curated by Alyssa Taylor Wendt and Sean Gaulager as the final exhibition in Co-Lab Project's Demo Gallery in downtown Austin. The work plays off of an expansive tradition of impractical architectural monuments generally celebrating triumph, the cannon of which is well known and typified by works such as Arc de Triomphe in Paris and the Arch of Constantine in Rome. Instead of celebrating military victory, Schwaigers' Arch points to a different type of valor, the one intrinsically tied to any act of devotion — from person to person, from person to ethos, to organization, to object, to tribe, to concept — the valor necessary to stand in the shadow of inevitable pain and loss, the price of feeling deeply. Unlike the countless triumphal arches spread across the globe and well tended by governments and conservationist groups Arch is intended to come down with the building it currently resides in during the building's demolition at the close of the exhibition. The work has no illusions or claims to permanence.
